Al Garcia, Brandon Sisk, and Karen Johnson all share a common passion for community. The three have worked together with the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities’ Employee Foundation for many years. Their work with the foundation includes running the company’s United Way fundraising campaign. But at the end of 2025, Al decided it was time to retire.
“I feel really confident with our team and that they’re going to do things that I wouldn’t even think of,” Al shared. “With Brandon and Karen’s leadership, it’s going to thrive and be successful.”
Al said he felt like a proud uncle watching the two of them take charge this year. Kansas City BPU increased its overall participation and the amount of money raised during its United Way campaign, resulting in the team being named a finalist for this year’s Employee Campaign Manager of the year honor at this year’s WaymakerTM Awards.
“It’s a pretty big honor and I truly think it recognizes our efforts. We don’t need recognition, but it’s just nice to see that our work doesn’t go unnoticed,” Brandon said.
Karen’s work with United Way feels very full circle. She’s grateful to now be in a position to make a difference for others in our community.
“About 25 years ago I was not where I am today. I had a lot of struggles in life. And there were agencies that really helped me become the person I am and to get my act together,” Karen said. “I’m now part of the solution, whereas before maybe Iwas part of the problem. I want everybody else to feel what I felt as I was growing and maturing into the person I am today. And it’s been because of United Way.”
In the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing the stories of all this year’s ECM of the Year nominees. We hope you’ll join us to celebrate their incredible impact during this year’s WaymakerTM Awards on July 16.
