This month, United Way recognized Harry and Clara Cleberg as winners of the Adele Hall Spirit of Caring Award during our first annual Waymaker Awards. This honor recognizes those who demonstrate passion for United Way’s mission; give generously of their time and talents to the Kansas City community; serve as a philanthropic role model for others; and are dedicated to making Kansas City a great place for all to thrive.
The Clebergs have been deeply involved with United Way for more than 50 years, serving in leadership capacities over the years and they were instrumental in helping launch 211, which today, responds to more than 358,000 contacts from our neighbors in need.
They actively participate in Tocqueville Society, both through philanthropic giving and dialogue about ways to enhance our community for future generations. And they remain incredibly humble, embodying the true spirit of giving.
“I’ve always admired United Way as essentially an overseer of the majority of the nonprofits in the greater Kansas City area, to help guide us in knowing where to make our contributions,” Harry Cleberg said.
Harry and Clara’s involvement with United Way began in Aberdeen, South Dakota back in 1962 and continued when they moved to Kansas City in the fall of 1968.
“He came home and was so excited to tell me all about United Way and that were going to contribute to this organization,” said Clara Cleberg.
“I was taught early in life, that you give to make people’s lives better,” said Clara. Harry continued, “We want to help make the next generation and our society as good as it can be and this is one way to help.”
The couple, who are now in their 80s, don’t spend much time thinking about their legacy. But they continually look for new ways to give back and to be involved with United Way initiatives and embody the philosophy of living each day to its fullest.
“If you devote most of your effort and energy on solutions rather than on complaints, the world will be a better place,” Harry said.
Thank you, Harry and Clara, for your selfless dedication to ensuring 1 in 3 Kansas Citians can be supported by United Way of Greater Kansas City each year. When each of us do our part, together we can have a tremendous impact in building healthier communities, enhancing youth and educational opportunities and fostering financial security for all.
