United Way of Greater Kansas City is pleased to announce a one-time inflation relief package in the form of direct payment to our most vulnerable neighbors in need.
A total of $1 million of assistance has been delivered in the form of prepaid debit cards in amounts ranging from $600-$1400, based on family size. This has been accomplished by working with trusted community partners and our 211 community resource navigators to identify and select recipients.
In the face of higher grocery, rent and utility costs, the average family is spending $400 more per month than it did a year ago. Wages for many workers have also not kept up with the pace of inflation. So this financial assistance comes at a critical time to ensure families, children and seniors can maintain their health and stability.
“United Way is more than a fundraising organization,” said Precious Stargell Cushman, United Way Chief Impact Officer. “We are a community-centered, solution-oriented, problem-solving organization for those who need it most, where they need it most and when they need it most.”
Once the program is fully complete, an estimated 1,000 families will benefit, made possible through the support of generous donors. There are no restrictions on how funds can be utilized, as part of our commitment to trust-based philanthropy—the belief our community can steward resources to best fit its needs. United Way is continuing to monitor how dollars through this initiative have been utilized, and we intend to issue a subsequent report on the incredible impact we know this investment will make.
It is important to note that all debit cards have already been committed; members of the public cannot apply for this program. We are also asking that the community does not call 211 requesting these prepaid debit cards.
