United Way has led the charge for eviction prevention during the pandemic, and looks to continue that work.
Without a safe place to call home, all other areas of life become a lot harder. Recognizing a need to address the eviction crisis in our community, we launched the Eviction Prevention Initiative pilot program in June 2020 alongside Heartland Center for Jobs and Freedom.
Although eviction was a crisis long before the pandemic, COVID-19 has put a spotlight on it and made an already serious issue dire for those struggling with job loss and in need of assistance. Despite the millions of dollars in aid already given to families to help prevent the loss of housing, it wasn’t enough to combat the complexities heightened by COVID-19.
How Does It Work?
The Eviction Prevention Initiative program works by slowing down the legal process and speeding up the financial assistance process for those facing eviction. It is carried out through these steps:
The program has already been a success! Between November 2020 and summer 2021, 469 families in Jackson, Clay and Platte Counties have been able to stay in their homes thanks to supporters like you.
