How Local Support Kept Joann’s Lights On After Hip Surgery

January 21, 2026

Joint pain has been a constant source of struggle for Joann T. for many years. She got some much needed relief late last year, with hip replacement surgery. But she’s been crippled by more than just the debilitating pain from the operation and her post-surgical therapy.

“I was struggling to make ends meet after the surgery,” Joann shared. “I was very much financially unstable.”

She’s applied for disability benefits, but until she hears something, she currently has no income at her disposal.

“I’m not able to work right now,” she said. “And the power company was about to shut me off.”

Joann paid a visit to her local Evergy office, looking for help. They encouraged her to apply for LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) and also referred her to United Way, as a possible candidate for assistance through the Critical Medical Needs program.

“I got a hold of my doctor to fill out the paperwork and you all were able to get me caught up, so I could keep my lights on,” said Joann. “This program helped me tremendously. It took the stress off.”

While times are still tough as she recovers, she’s grateful for support from her family, church and all those who give to United Way of Greater Kansas City, making support for neighbors like her, possible.

“I’m just thankful because I was really stressed, so I just appreciate anybody who has donated to make this happen.”

Thanks to support from utility providers Evergy and Spire, along with generous donors like you, more than $683,000 in assistance was delivered through the Critical Medical Needs program in 2025.
