Serving Community, Recharging My Spirit: Lunch with Nourish KC Community Kitchen

November 20, 2025

*This month, we’re delighted to share a guest post on the impact of volunteerism from one of United Way’s newest staff members: Jaie Derousselle, Vice President of Business Systems & Data Analytics.

An afternoon of service with KC Current players and UWGKC staff reminded me what it means to live United.

Recently, I had the privilege of joining Nourish KC Community Kitchen, a program of The Prospect KC, to serve lunch alongside staff and players from the KC Current and members of our UWGKC team.

When my supervisor, Ann, first invited me, I said yes right away — but I don’t think I realized just how much I needed this experience. My service tank had been running on empty. Between moving to a new state, starting a new job, and the busyness of everyday life, it had been a while since I’d carved out time to volunteer. I missed that feeling of connection that comes from being face-to-face with the people we aim to serve each day.

The moment I walked into the Community Kitchen, I felt that spark return. The air buzzed with laughter and warmth — volunteers preparing trays, KC Current players chatting with guests, and the smell of home-cooked food filling the space. There was no “us” and “them.” Just neighbors coming together over a shared meal.

While serving lunch, I had the chance to talk with several guests — people from all walks of life who came not only for nourishment but also for a moment of dignity and kindness. Each conversation left an impression. I heard stories of resilience, gratitude, and hope. Some people talked about their day, others about their families or favorite local teams. Every exchange reminded me of the power of simply listening and being present for someone.

That’s the beauty of Nourish KC and The Prospect KC — they meet people where they are, offering healthy food, job training, and community resources all in one place. It’s not just about a meal; it’s about creating pathways toward stability and self-sufficiency.

For me, this experience re-centered what United Way’s mission is all about: connecting people, resources, and compassion to strengthen the fabric of our Kansas City community. We often say “United is the Way,” but sometimes we need moments like this to truly feel it — to remember that service is not only about giving; it’s also about receiving.

I walked away that day with a full heart. The people I met, the teamwork with KC Current players and UWGKC colleagues, and the shared sense of purpose all reminded me why I love what I do. It was a reset — one that filled my heart and soul with renewed energy and hope for what’s ahead.

I’m grateful to have this time and space again to give back, and I look forward to finding more opportunities to serve soon. Most of all, I’m honored to do it with this amazing group of Waymakers — colleagues and partners who lead with empathy, show up for others, and believe deeply in the power of community.
