One in four adults in the U.S. lives with a disability. Disability inclusion goes beyond physical accessibility. It means creating a community where people of all abilities are empowered, represented, and fully supported. Across Kansas City, nonprofit organizations are working every day to break down barriers and champion inclusion at school, at work, and in everyday life.
Here are five organizations making a meaningful impact on disability inclusion in our region:
1. Ability KC
Ability KC has been a pillar in our community for more than 75 years, supporting children and adults with disabilities through medical rehabilitation, therapeutic preschool, and vocational services. They offer individualized support that helps people of all ages reach their goals, whether that’s learning to walk again after an injury, entering the workforce, or gaining independence. Their commitment to inclusion, innovation, and possibility ensures that every person has the opportunity to thrive.
2. Don Bosco Centers
Known for its programs that serve older adults, immigrants, and people with disabilities, Don Bosco Centers provides adult day health services that give individuals the support they need while also providing peace of mind for caregivers. These services offer a safe, stimulating environment that prioritizes social engagement, nutrition, and individualized care, fostering dignity and community connections for adults with disabilities.
3. Job One
Job One helps adults with disabilities find meaningful employment through vocational training, job placement, and supported employment services. Their inclusive employment model gives individuals with disabilities the chance to develop skills, contribute to their community, and build long-term careers. By partnering with local businesses, Job One is also changing perceptions around disability and work—proving that inclusion benefits everyone.
4. YMCA of Greater Kansas City
The YMCA is a champion for inclusive health and wellness. From adaptive fitness programs to swim lessons and youth enrichment, the Y ensures individuals of all abilities can participate in healthy, community-centered activities. Through partnerships with schools and healthcare providers, the YMCA is also making sure families have access to affordable, inclusive opportunities that support physical and social development for kids with disabilities.
5. Transition Academy
Transition Academy supports young adults with disabilities as they move from high school to adulthood, helping them build the skills and confidence they need to live independently and work competitively. Their hands-on learning approach includes employment exploration, life skills development, and community-based internships. Transition Academy is creating a clear path to self-sufficiency—one young person at a time.
These are just five organizations doing the essential work of making Kansas City a place where everyone can participate fully and equally. When we support disability inclusion, we’re not just making systems more accessible—we’re building a stronger, more compassionate community for all.
