As the cost of basic necessities continues to climb, more working households are finding it difficult to make ends meet. Rising rent, utility bills, grocery costs and fuel expenses are stretching budgets thin, and any unexpected challenge—like a medical diagnosis, job disruption or family emergency—can create additional barriers that are difficult to overcome alone. These are the exact reasons United Way 211 is here for our community—24 hours a day, seven days a week, with service in 150 languages. Whether it’s an everyday hardship or an unanticipated one, 211 is here with caring Community Resource Specialists (CRS) trained to help navigate 7,000+ local resources to provide support, as highlighted in these calls from May.
A 60-year-old woman reached out to 211, searching for assistance in paying her rent. She had fallen behind in making payments and was also looking for help with food for the week. The CRS was able to provide several referrals for both rental assistance and to neighborhood food pantries. The caller requested follow up by text and when asked about her satisfaction with the service with 211 she shared, “I was very pleased with the lady and she was a big comfort and help. I really appreciate her and the assistance.” The caller also shared her gratitude for 211 and indicated she won’t hesitate to reach out in the future if she needs anything else.
A Kansas City father called 211 facing a difficult situation. His electricity had recently been shut off, after he fell short of covering the full bill. Despite working full-time, he shared how challenging it had become to stretch his budget far enough to support himself and his children. He’d already paid a portion of the balance, doing what he could to stay afloat, but needed help to cover the remaining balance due. Determined to resolve the issue, he made it clear he was willing to travel to any appointment necessary to secure assistance. The CRS took time to listen and understand his situation. Together, they explored available options, focusing on local programs that could provide utility assistance. The specialist identified three organizations currently accepting applications and walked the caller through each one in detail. Rather than simply naming the resources, the specialist ensured the caller felt prepared and confident. They reviewed application processes, outlined required documentation, and clarified next steps to make the process as easy as possible moving forward. By the end of the conversation, the caller was very thankful, not just for the information but also for the respect and care he was shown. He felt supported and reassured, knowing he had a plan to move forward and keep his household stable.
These two calls highlight the importance of meeting people where they are, with both practical solutions and compassion. It’s more than just a referral to pay a bill or put food on the table, but restoring a sense of stability, dignity, and hope for the future.
A local cancer patient connected with 211 after just completing a session of chemotherapy. This milestone brought both relief and exhaustion and more than anything, she needed a compassionate voice to listen. The 211 Community Resource Specialist she reached met her exactly where she was and recognized her fatigue, allowing her to share openly without pressure. It wasn’t just about finding resources, but also creating a space where she could feel heard in a vulnerable moment during her recovery. During the conversation, the CRS shared information about supportive options tailored to the caller’s needs. They talked about Cancer Action, a United Way partner, offering services to address the physical, emotional, financial and social challenges of living with cancer. They also talked about services through the local American Cancer Society office, ensuring the caller had multiple avenues of support available. By the end of the call, the woman expressed deep gratitude—not only for the resource connections, but for the kindness she was shown. Navigating recovery can feel like a lot to handle, but with guidance and care, it becomes more manageable.
This interaction is a powerful reminder that sometimes the most important service 211 can provide is simply listening, and that healing extends beyond medical treatment into connection, understanding and community support.
