Every child deserves to feel safe at home, at school, and in the spaces where they grow, learn, and play. But for too many children in our community, safety is not guaranteed.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to recognize the importance of safe, stable, and nurturing environments for every child.
Child abuse and neglect are often hidden, happening behind closed doors and leaving lasting impacts on a child’s physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The effects can ripple far beyond childhood, shaping futures in ways no child should have to endure..
Across Kansas City, organizations are working every day to protect children, support families, and create pathways toward healing. They are advocates, counselors, educators, and caregivers who show up in some of the most difficult moments to help children find safety, stability, and hope.
Here are just five of many organizations doing this life-changing work:
Sunflower House
Sunflower House provides a safe, child-friendly space where children can share their experiences and begin the healing process. Through forensic interviews, medical exams, and therapy services, they reduce trauma and ensure children don’t have to navigate the system alone. Early intervention and trauma-informed care can make all the difference in a child’s recovery.
The Children’s Place
The Children’s Place specializes in early childhood mental health, helping young children heal from abuse, neglect, and other traumatic experiences. Their therapists work closely with both children and caregivers to build strong, supportive relationships. Healing early helps children build the emotional foundation they need to thrive in the long term.
Child Protection Center
Child Protection Center works to prevent abuse and support families through education, advocacy, and intervention services. Their programs empower caregivers with tools and resources to create safer environments for children.
FosterAdopt Connect
FosterAdopt Connect supports foster and adoptive families with resources, advocacy, and direct services. From crisis support to everyday essentials, they help ensure children in the foster care system feel safe, supported, and valued. Every child deserves stability, connection, and a place to call home.
CAPACares
CAPACares works directly with families through in-home support, parenting education, and crisis intervention. Their approach focuses on strengthening families to prevent abuse before it happens. Meeting families where they are creates lasting change and safer homes for children.
This Child Abuse Prevention Month, we have an opportunity to do more than raise awareness; we can be part of the solution. By supporting and highlighting organizations like these, we help ensure that more children are heard, more families are supported, and more futures are protected. Because every child deserves not just to be safe, but to be seen, supported, and given the chance to thrive.
