From workforce development and education to advocacy and youth empowerment, these organizations are paving the way toward a brighter, more equitable future for our region.


Black History Month is a time to reflect on the resilience and contributions of Black leaders, past and present. It’s also an opportunity to uplift the organizations doing the work today, creating lasting change and building opportunity year-round.
As part of our commitment to advancing equity and strengthening communities, United Way of Greater Kansas City is proud to support these nonprofit partners whose work empowers the Black community across our region:
1. Black Excellence, Inc.
Black Excellence, Inc. is dedicated to empowering Black youth and families through education, mentorship, and community-based programming. By fostering leadership, confidence, and opportunity, the organization helps young people reach their full potential and build pathways to long-term success.
2. Black Owned Business Kansas City Foundation
The Black Owned Business Kansas City Foundation works to strengthen the local economy by uplifting Black entrepreneurs and business owners. Through advocacy, education, and connection, the foundation helps increase visibility, access, and sustainability for Black-owned businesses across the Kansas City region.
3. JustUs Systems Inc.
JustUs Systems Inc. focuses on creating healing-centered spaces for Black youth and communities. Through trauma-informed programming, education, and advocacy, the organization addresses systemic inequities while supporting mental wellness, resilience, and justice.
4. The Kansas City Defender
The Kansas City Defender is a Black-led media organization committed to amplifying Black voices, telling untold stories, and holding systems accountable. Through journalism, advocacy, and community engagement, The Defender provides critical information while advancing equity and justice in Kansas City.
5. Urban League of Greater Kansas City
For more than a century, the Urban League of Greater Kansas City has been a cornerstone of economic empowerment and civil rights advocacy. The organization supports individuals and families through workforce development, education, housing support, and health initiatives—creating pathways to opportunity and stability.
