5 Organizations Supporting KC Families this Holiday Season

December 19, 2025

The holidays can be a joyful time, but for many families, they can also bring added stress and uncertainty. Across the Kansas City metro, several nonprofit organizations are stepping up to ensure families feel supported, cared for, and hopeful during the season. From providing meals and gifts to creating shopping experiences, these organizations are making a meaningful difference:

CAPA Cares – Baskets of Hope

CAPA Cares’ Baskets of Hope program brings warmth and relief to families by providing holiday baskets filled with items that promote family connection, such as board games, popcorn, movie candy, blankets, and gift cards for food or activities.

Community Services League – Christmas Store

At Community Services League’s Christmas Store, families experience the holidays through choice and dignity. Instead of receiving pre-packed gifts, parents can shop for their children in a store-like environment, selecting gifts that best fit their family’s needs and traditions.

KVC Kansas – Holiday Hero

KVC Kansas’ Holiday Hero program ensures children and families involved in foster care feel seen and celebrated during the holidays. Community members step up as “heroes” by donating gifts, clothing, and essentials tailored to each child’s wishes.

The Salvation Army – Give Hope Meals & Gifts

Through the Give Hope initiative, The Salvation Army of Kansas and Western Missouri provides both meals and gifts to families facing hardship during the holidays. These efforts address immediate needs, like food insecurity, while also creating moments of joy and connection for children and caregivers.

Catholic Charities – Christmas Shining Star

Catholic Charities’ Christmas Shining Star offers families a dignified shopping experience where parents can select gifts, food, and essentials at no cost. The program is rooted in respect, compassion, and empowerment, ensuring families can celebrate the holidays without added financial stress.

How You Can Help This Holiday Season

These organizations, and many others across our region, rely on community support to make their holiday programs possible. Whether you choose to donate, volunteer, or share information with others, your involvement can help families feel supported during a critical time of year.

Together, we can help our neighbors have a holiday season filled with hope, dignity, and care.
