Facing a Utility Shutoff, One Artist Found Relief Through United Way 211

When unexpected expenses pile up, even a small amount of financial assistance can be the difference between stability and crisis. For one local fiber artist, a disconnect notice from her utility company was the tipping point. 

“I had more bills coming in than I had money,” 79-year-old Valeria shared. “I was in a real, real pinch.”

That’s when she learned about United Way 211, our 24/7 resource and referral service that connects people to assistance. After calling 211, she spoke with a community resource specialist who listened with compassion and offered a solution she didn’t know existed—a prepaid debit card to help cover urgent expenses.

“The lady who helped me really had a heart because it was almost like she said, ‘I’m going to do something else.’ It’s like her heart was connected to mine,” Valeria shared. “That card helped me pay a whole bunch of people within two days. Utility bills, doctor bills… I had tons of those. I just really appreciate it.”

United Way launched its debit card program more than two years ago to provide fast, flexible financial assistance to families struggling with the rising costs of groceries, gas, rent, and utilities driven by inflation. 

“It just takes a load off you,” she said. “I want to pay my bills, but when you don’t have the money, it’s hard. It’s just so hard. When you’re poor, everything costs more—added fees, reconnection charges, even gas to get somewhere. It’s just a deep relief.”

Despite navigating various health challenges, Valeria is committed to working as long as she is able. 

“I do textiles, Matisse rugs, and now I’m painting fabric,” she explained. “I’ve been fortunate to have art in major collections, and I’m still educating when I can. If I can get a contract, there’s work. I’ll never retire. As long as I have a piece of a muscle, I’m going to work that muscle.”

Valeria’s caught up on her electricity bill but is worried about the cost of keeping the gas and water going as the cold weather sets in. Her experience reminds us why our collective support matters more than ever.

So far, United Way of Greater Kansas City has invested nearly $2 million to support the financial security of households struggling to keep up with every day and urgent expenses. Through 211 and partnerships with 20 local agencies, recipients have received on average $930 in debit card assistance.
