Hunger is a reality for thousands of Kansas Citians, with 1 in 7 people not knowing where their next meal will come from. Thankfully, local organizations are stepping up to provide food, hope, and community support to those most in need. This Hunger Action Month, we want to spotlight five incredible Impact 100 organizations working tirelessly to fight hunger and food insecurity across our region.
1. KC Shepherd’s Centers
KC Shepherd’s Centers focus on enhancing the quality of life for older adults through enrichment programs, volunteer opportunities, and nutrition support. Their Meals on Wheels program and food assistance efforts ensure that seniors, who are often among the most vulnerable to food insecurity, have access to regular, nutritious meals and companionship.
2. Jewish Family Services of Greater Kansas City (JFS)
JFS operates two food pantries in Kansas City, serving thousands of individuals every month. Unique to their model, JFS runs its pantries like grocery stores, giving clients the dignity of choosing the foods they want and need. Their work focuses not only on alleviating hunger but also on ensuring clients receive healthy options that fit their dietary and cultural needs.

3. Hope Faith
Hope Faith is Kansas City’s only day center dedicated to serving people experiencing homelessness. Alongside healthcare, housing resources, and case management, they provide daily hot meals, food pantries, and emergency food packs. For many, Hope Faith is the first step in rebuilding stability and regaining hope through compassionate, consistent support.
4. Cross-Lines Community Outreach
For more than 50 years, Cross-Lines has been a lifeline for low-income individuals and families in Wyandotte County. Their food pantry, community kitchen, and senior commodities program provide nutritious meals and groceries to thousands every year. Beyond food, they offer case management, rent and utility assistance, and other resources designed to break the cycle of poverty.

5. True Light Family Resource Center
Located in midtown Kansas City, True Light Family Resource Center meets immediate needs while building long-term stability. Their community meals program serves hot, nutritious food to neighbors experiencing homelessness and hunger, while their food pantry helps families supplement their grocery needs. They also provide clothing, job readiness support, and other wraparound services that give people a path toward stability.
