Life took an unexpected turn for Marcus W. earlier this year, after a serious injury at work. In late January, he was hospitalized for three weeks after surgery. By the time he was released from the hospital in February, bills had begun piling up, rent was past due, and the fear of eviction loomed large.
“I had never been in a position like this where I needed rental assistance to pay rent for myself and my daughter,” Marcus said.
That’s when the family turned to United Way 211, our 24/7 free and confidential helpline, which can connect residents of the 23 counties surrounding Kansas City to more than 7,000 community resources. With one call, he was connected to compassionate people and vital resources. One of those resources was Seton Center, a local agency that provides rent assistance and other critical support services.
“Seton Center’s rental assistance kept me and my daughter in our home and allowed me time to seek additional assistance,” he shared.
Following the rent assistance, Marcus also received help with utility bills.
“It went well. They helped me and my daughter without judgment and were very caring and open,” he said.
When asked why he would recommend 211 to others, he shared, “Help is available. You have to believe first, then seek help through 211 for resources.”
With support from donors and neighbors in the community, United Way of Greater Kansas City is able to continue providing 211 services, connecting those in need to essential services across the Greater Kansas City region. Already this year, 211 is continuing to see an increased demand for help, with an additional 3500 calls coming in compared to this time last year.
“I thank God for all of you blessing people in need of financial assistance,” Marcus shared.
