In honor of Women’s History Month, we’re thrilled to highlight the work of Women United, a group of female philanthropists who, through United Way, give generously to uplift early childhood education through financial support, advocacy and volunteerism. Current Women United Chair Renita Mollman, Chief Administrative Officer with Burns & McDonnell, shared her perspectives on philanthropy with us and her passion to ensuring a future where all have the ability to thrive.
Being involved in philanthropy has shown me even the smallest contributions can lead to meaningful change. Generosity isn’t about how much you give, but the impact it creates.
Seeing the direct results of our efforts has shaped my perspective on leadership and community. It’s about showing up, taking action and inspiring others to do the same.
It’s why I chose to get involved with United Way while leading Burns & McDonnell’s California region. I joined the Orange County United Way Women’s Philanthropy Fund, a group of influential and passionate women who create long-lasting social and economic change. When I moved to Kansas City, I knew I wanted to continue making a difference, so I joined the Women United Cabinet.
My work with United Way of Greater Kansas City has been such a rewarding experience—to support local children. And this year, serving as chair, is an incredible honor.
I especially love our Purses for Promise event, happening this year on April 17th at The Gallery. It’s the ultimate night out! This is one of my favorite events that supports a great cause: early childhood development. This year’s Purses for Promise is set to be an evening of fun and glam you won’t want to miss! Expect an inspiring and fun night of sipping, shopping and celebrating to help uplift the next generation with the reading skills and tools they need to thrive.
I’m personally passionate about advancing women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), as well as early childhood development, because I believe both are essential for shaping the future. I’ve seen firsthand how early exposure to STEM can ignite a lifelong passion, particularly in young girls, and I want to be a part of that journey. Whether I’m speaking at events, mentoring students or volunteering, I strive to be a teacher, leader and advocate.
Every day, we’re inspired by people and organizations like the United Way that are devoted to the public good. We’re proud to support and amplify their work. Giving back isn’t an obligation of corporate culture at Burns & McDonnell. It’s a privilege and personal commitment our employee-owners share.
It’s why both within our company, and the community, I encourage others to get involved. I want YOU to be part of this mission, too. Get your tickets to Purses for Promise here or find other ways to give back, get involved and take action with United Way at unitedwaygkc.org.
