Poverty affects every corner of Kansas City, impacting families and individuals striving to make ends meet. For over 100 years, United Way Impact 100 partner Community Services League (CSL) has been a pillar of hope, working to address poverty at its roots and create opportunities for brighter futures. This National Poverty Awareness Month, we’re spotlighting the essential services CSL provides to our community.
CSL’s mission is simple yet impactful: to lift individuals and families out of poverty and provide the tools they need to achieve long-term stability. Its services address critical needs, offering solutions that go beyond temporary fixes. Here’s a closer look at how CSL is making a difference:
1. Housing Stability
Homelessness and housing insecurity are some of the most visible signs of poverty. CSL’s housing programs provide rental and utility assistance to families facing eviction or disconnection, ensuring they have a safe place to call home. The Hawthorne Place HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) program, run by Community Services League, is the largest Section 8 housing complex in Missouri. The program focuses on empowering families to achieve long-term stability through services like financial coaching, employment assistance, educational programs, and access to resources that address immediate needs. CSL helps transform lives in this underserved community.
2. Employment and Workforce Development
A sustainable income is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. CSL’s workforce development programs offer job training, resume building, and employment placement services. They also collaborate with local businesses to provide individuals with opportunities to gain skills and secure meaningful employment.
3. Financial Coaching
Many families in poverty struggle with financial literacy. CSL’s financial coaching program equips clients with the knowledge and tools they need to manage their money, reduce debt, and build savings. These resources empower families to achieve financial stability and plan for their future.
4. Food and Basic Needs Assistance
CSL operates food pantries across the region, providing groceries and essential items to families in need. From diapers and hygiene products to fresh produce and canned goods, these services help meet immediate needs while reducing the burden on struggling households.
5. BlendWell Cafe
In 2018, CSL opened BlendWell Cafe, a space to gather in an underserved area of Independence, Mo. The cafe operates as a safe place for all and a community workspace. The WorkLife Center at BlendWell is a community-based service that helps neighbors connect with career opportunities and build financial stability in their lives.
CSL’s approach isn’t just about providing services; it’s about transforming lives. This month, they celebrate a remarkable milestone—helping their 34th individual achieve the dream of homeownership.
By addressing the root causes of poverty, they give families the tools and support they need to build brighter, more secure futures. Whether it’s helping a parent find stable employment or ensuring a child has enough to eat, CSL’s work touches every aspect of life.
Poverty isn’t just a statistic; it’s a reality faced by thousands of our neighbors. This month, join us in advocating for an end to poverty. Here’s how you can make a difference:
