A Promise to Early Childhood Education

February 21, 2024

Purses for Promise is less than two months away! There’s one significant, exciting change to how the dollars you invest during this event will be utilized to fulfill Women United’s mission of enhancing access and opportunities for early childhood education in our community.

We’re thrilled to share that funds raised from this year’s event will help all early childhood education initiatives supported by United Way of Greater Kansas City, including Impact 100 partner Start at Zero.

Start at Zero uses the parents as teachers curriculum model through home visiting to support local families. All programming is offered at no cost to participants and is available in both English and Spanish.

“We do developmental screenings with the families, too. We help the families notice how the children is developing and what they’re doing,” said Arleen Martinez, Start at Zero’s director of programs. “It is really to see how the baby’s doing and what we can do to help that child to continue developing appropriately.”

Currently, Start at Zero works with approximately 90 families each year.

“We have an amazing team. They work really hard not only to provide great services to their families, also quality services to their families,” Martinez said.

Being selected to receive funds from Purses for Promise, hosted by Women United, is deeply meaningful to the organization.

“We are so excited that you guys chose us. The more funding we get, we can help more families and we can provide more services for them,” said Martinez. “As women, we need to support each other. We need to help our other sisters with their crown and make it beautiful and always straight up–make sure that her crown is in place and we can support them and give them all the tools they need to thrive.”
