Today and everyday, we want to celebrate mothers and those who stand in as motherly figures. Motherhood can be full of challenges. Luckily, there are several incredible agencies in our region that support mothers in need, such as Impact 100 organization, Mother’s Refuge.
Miyya had been in and out of foster care homes since she was 12, until she aged out. She had previously been diagnosed with PTSD, Bipolar Disorder, and anxiety, and had suffered abuse from members in her biological family and foster families. Miyya graduated high school and had a job, but she needed help after finding out she was pregnant.
Mother’s Refuge helped Miyya apply for Medicaid and she participated in their pregnancy and parenting classes, as well as other important life skills classes. In December of 2020, she delivered a healthy baby boy. While she was at the Mother’s Refuge shelter, she maintained employment, put thousands of dollars into savings, and bought a car.
Miyya graduated from their residential program in 2022 and became one of the first moms to move into the Transitional Living Program. She was able to start therapy and begin growing her support system outside of Mother’s Refuge.
“Before coming to Mother’s Refuge, I was in a very bad situation. I honestly didn’t think that I was going to get anywhere. This place has definitely changed me and my life. It made me realize that I was taking life for granted, that I wanted to be better for my son, and that he deserved a better life . . . thank you for all the love and support that all of you give. It definitely makes living at Mother’s Refuge feel like a safe place to live.”
Thank you to Mother’s Refuge and all the organizations that support mothers and motherly figures!
