United Way Programs and Nonprofit Partners Help Kansas City Family Achieve Stability

September 15, 2026

The last few years, TaMera’s life has felt like a constant push and pull of working hard to get ahead, facing an unexpected life challenge, and then falling behind.

Last year, the Kansas City mom’s car broke down. She started picking up side hustles, like cleaning homes, to make some extra cash.

“I’ve definitely had some struggles,” she said, “But I’ll always prioritize my son, and doing whatever is needed to make sure I can care for him.”

This summer, she was in between jobs and decided to enroll in school. But that decision further stressed her financial security.

“I was just really behind on every bill you can think of,” she said.

As summer break began, her child’s school shared information about United Way 211 and our nonprofit partners. She reached out, desperate to find assistance in tackling her debt and utility bills.

“I was having to make choices on whether to pay a bill or buy food to feed my son,” TaMera shared.

United Way 211 Connects Families to Local Nonprofit Support

TaMera was connected with a nonprofit partner participating in the UHONS (United Helping Our Neighbors Statewide) program. The United Way partnership helps Missouri households facing immediate financial hardship with essential expenses like housing, utilities, transportation and childcare.

UHONS Provides Emergency Assistance for Missouri Households

Through UHONS, more than $337,000 in financial assistance has been provided to individuals and families in need this year, with support delivered through 19 local nonprofit partners. More than 300 households have been provided aid.

“The support I received means more than I could ever put into words,” TaMera said. “It’s a rarity if I ask anyone for help, and to do so is a very brave feat. I feel eternally grateful for United Way’s support.”

Help Fill the Gaps for Kansas City Families

We know that 1 in 3 Kansas City area households don’t earn enough each month to make ends meet. Your support helps United Way meet the needs of these individuals and families in achieving financial security. Give today to make a meaningful impact.

“Thank you doesn’t even begin to describe my gratitude for those who make United Way’s programs possible,” said TaMera. “I’m manifesting for myself to one day be in a position to give back to everyone around me. I’d love to pour into others like this community has done for my son and I. I used to think I’d never be able to receive assistance because I wasn’t ‘struggling enough’. United Way made life more possible for me and I’ll always be appreciative for what’s been done for my son and I.”
