United Way 211 Kansas City: Free, Confidential Help for Housing, Utilities, Food and More

September 8, 2026

Kansas City residents can call United Way 211 for free, confidential help with housing, utilities, food, health care and other essential needs. When a life emergency happens, United Way of Greater Kansas City’s 211 helpline is here to assist people in finding a place to start. In 2026, call volume is nearly 9% above the same period last year—a sign of the continued financial strain high consumer costs are placing on Kansas City families, seniors and other community members who need assistance.

KANSAS CITY 211 HELPLINE SUPPORTS A FAMILY FACING EVICTION AFTER A HEALTH SCARE

A young parent in Kansas City, Mo., called United Way 211 during one of the most frightening moments a family can face. After medical issues led to the loss of her job, she fell behind on housing expenses and learned she was at risk of eviction, with a court date already scheduled.

With young children at home and no family nearby to lean on, she worried that one setback could leave her family without a safe place to stay. Like many Kansas City residents searching for emergency rent assistance, eviction prevention or legal guidance, she was overwhelmed and unsure where to begin.

A United Way 211 Community Resource Specialist met her call with compassion. The specialist listened closely, helped her sort through the immediate crisis and connected her to local housing resources, rent payment assistance options and legal assistance through Kansas City’s Right to Counsel program.

The call did more than provide referrals. It reminded her that she was not facing the system alone. Through 211, United Way helped turn a confusing, emotional situation into a plan she could act on; one rooted in dignity, practical support and connection to people ready to help.

By the end of the conversation, she expressed gratitude for the guidance and reassurance she received. Her path forward still required courage and follow-through, but she ended the call feeling more prepared to advocate for her children, protect her housing stability and take the next step with support behind her.

UNITED WAY 211 CONNECTS AN OLDER ADULT TO UTILITY ASSISTANCE IN KANSAS CITY

When a 60-year-old woman contacted 211, she was facing the stress and uncertainty of having her electricity disconnected. Although she was working full time, she had fallen behind on her Evergy bill and could not pay the full balance needed to restore service. She had paid what she could, but still needed help with the remaining amount.

The 211 Community Resource Specialist listened with care and helped her explore utility assistance programs in the Kansas City area that could help restore power. Together, they reviewed possible options and connected her to The Salvation Army, Northland Assistance Center and Love, Inc. The specialist made sure she understood how to begin applying for assistance, helping her move from uncertainty to a clearer next step.

A few days later, during a follow-up call, she shared encouraging news: Northland Assistance Center helped her secure support. She rated her 211 experience a “perfect 5/5” and said, “I feel very blessed I was able to get this help.” Her story reflects what United Way’s 211 helpline makes possible every day—neighbors being heard, guided and connected to community resources when they need them most.
